Tal vez debido a que no tengan una historia trágica detrás del grupo, puede que porque los hermanos Davis no acostumbren a dar grandes titulares, lo ciertos es que a veces se nos olvida que The Kinks son por derecho propio una de las piedras filosofales del pop, que han estado activos como grupo casi hasta (como quien dice) anteayer y que siempre hay un runrún en el ambiente a propósito de una posible nueva reunión. Pero los discos y las canciones inolvidables ahí están y también el respeto de músicos como David Bowie o Yo La Tengo que consideran que nunca hubieran llegado a publicar sus discos si The Kinks no hubieran existido.
De hecho David Bowie ha querido de alguna forma rendirles homenaje escirbiendo las notas interiores de "The Essential Kinks", el enésimo best of de la banda de Londres que verá la luz en forma de doble disco vía Legacy el 14 de octubre. "Nunca he escuchado una canción de The Kinks que no me haya gustado", escribe David Bowie en esas notas.
Además Legacy también reeditará una versión extendida y remasterizada de "Muswell Hillbillies", el álbum que The Kinks publicaron en 1971. La edición contará con nueve canciones adicionales y un dvd con apariciones de la banda en TV.
Desde hace un par de días Legacy también ha puesto en circulación como lanzamiento digital versiones remasterizadas de 16 discos de The Kinks, concretamente de los lanzamientos que arrancan con el citado "Muswell Hillbillies" y que van hasta su disco de 1984 "Word of Mouth".
